Game reserves: Suricates are typical to the Kalahari. Best to be watched in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.
Suricate
Suricates belong to the mongoose family. Sometimes they are confused with ground squirrels, but their short and thin tails differentiate them. They are found in open territory, primarily in the dry savannah of South Africa and in the Kalahari. Suricates live in underground tunnels in groups of 10 to 20 animals. They are in constant motion and not easily photographed. But sometimes one can meet a whole group of them in front of their burrow with their faces turned towards the sun. Because the young ones are easy prey for predatory birds and snakes, the burrow entrances are constantly guarded by one member of the pack while the others are out looking for food.
