in Cape Town

The modern Cape Town International Airport has grown tremendously over the last few years and now registers almost 5 million passengers per year. It is, however, easy to find one's way around the airport. Being 22 kms from the city centre, it is much less hectic than European airports. It has two international terminals; arrivals and departures, and two terminals for national traffic. All of them are a short walking distance apart from each other. For travelling around Cape Town, or South Africa for that matter, it is best to rent a car. To get about with public transport is a hassle. There are no tubes or trams, the only exception being the Metro, a city train between the Main Station and Simonstown. The town busses go almost everywhere, but just not frequently enough. Their furnishings are anything but comfortable, and during rush hour they are crammed.

Blue Train

The minibus-taxis cover the whole area of Cape Town. These 9-seater busses usually transport 12 persons. Many of the taxis are old and in an unsafe condition. To travel with them is cheap and adventurous to the point of dangerous.

Railway connections are scarce in South Africa. Whoever wants to see the country without hiring a car, should go by overland bus. Greyhound and Intercape busses drive from the central bus station in Adderley Street to basically any major town in the country. The service is acceptable and the prices are good. Flying is obviously faster and more comfortable. The airline Kulula.com is the cheapest. Take a lunch box along, they don't offer any service on board.
