Sea Point
Sea Point acquired a bad reputation some years ago because of all the resident pick-pockets and other criminals. However, after some thorough investigations, more camera serveillance and an increased police presence in the streets, the situation has turned around. Of course one still has to be careful - like in any other big city in the world, especially if you walk the streets after dark on your own. But it can really be recommended to stay over in Sea Point. It is a lively part of town, which is also reflected in the offer of accommodation available in all categories, from the cheapest backpacker lodge or B&B to the most luxurious hotel on the promenade with a seaview scope of 180 degrees.
The beaches are narrow and mostly rocky, but still good for sun-bathing. For swimming you should rather visit the big public seawater swimming pool which is a 100 metre long pool with a 5 metre jumping board. There is a stunning view of the sea usually with container ships heading for the harbour in Table Bay, or China, and Robben Island lying in the distance.
Mouille Point
Between Sea Point and the Waterfront, lies Mouille Point. Its landmark is the lighthouse from the year 1824. It was the first solid lighthouse built from bricks in South Africa. The 20 metre high tower first had a petroleum-fired lantern with a radius of 6 nautical miles. But then in 1929, an electric light was installed, the flash of which was visible from up to a distance of 25 nautic miles. The lighthouse can be visited during the week from 9 am until 3 pm.
Green Point
Green Point is the suburb closest to the centre of town. One can easily walk to either the centre of town or the Waterfront. For golfers, the Metropolitan Golf Course ( 9 holes) may be of interest. The big and famous fleamarket takes place on sundays from 8 am until 4 pm.
